Success story from GlobalGiving project leader, Maria Springer

For four weeks, I went uber-unreasonable. Speeches, letter-writing, phone calls, video editing, emails, newsletter, dinners, canvassing, t-shirt making, tweeting, Facebooking and passionate and relentless blogging led to 252 individual donations and a spot at the 2010 Unreasonable Institute.

I arrived to find my two roommates – Khalida, who was fighting honor killings with Participatory Development Initiatives in rural Pakistan, and Trina, rehabilitating young female commercial sex trade workers with Kranti in India – with huge open arms. Yes, I was overwhelmed with joy. With housemates from over 16 countries who became some of my dearest friends, the Unreasonable Institute was the most precious gift I’ve ever received (even though I had to pay for it).

Thinking big was expected. Thinking beyond where our imaginations had ever dared to wander – that is what I learned during an unreasonable 2010 summer.

Today, our mission at LivelyHoods is to create livelihoods for youth in urban slums. Through our sales agent network, we’re employing motivated youth to distribute life-changing products like solar lamps and clean burning cook stoves to urban slum residents. Now youth that once survived by sifting through garbage dumps to find metal scraps are sitting at the forefront of developing markets in their communities.

Thanks to Unreasonable – we have the business acumen, mentorship and unreasonable family required to grow LivelyHoods to every continent.

LOVE the name - Unreasonable Institute! And really it's so true - sometimes we must think unreasonably....most say out of the box - but it's kind of the same idea. Exposure to seasoned entrepreneurs, practitioners and leaders such as the ones listed is a great idea. Networking and meeting others on similiar quests (to make the world a better place) is so awesome - and keeps you feeling like your connected with those who have similiar interests / goals. How great is that!
