This World Refugee Day, We Look to Syrians

This World Refugee Day, We Look to Syrians

Today, the UN estimates 11 million Syrians are displaced both inside and outside of their home country. This makes Syrians the largest refugee population in the world, and there are tragically no signs of this civil war slowing down.

GlobalGiving is steadfast in its commitment to support our nonprofit partners in providing urgent humanitarian assistance to the men, women, and children of Syria, whether they remain in the country or have escaped across borders.

That is why for World Refugee Day on Tuesday, June 20th, from 9:00am EDT to 11:59pm EDT, GlobalGiving is putting up $50,000 in matching funds and $4,000 in bonus prizes for our nonprofit partners playing a critical role in the Syrian refugee relief efforts.

Nepal Earthquake Relief Projects Matched at 50%

Two years ago, on April 25, 2015 a 7.8 magnitude earthquake violently shook Nepal just outside the capital of Kathmandu and sent devastating shocks through surrounding areas. Local GlobalGiving nonprofit partners and aid organizations immediately stepped up to start the recovery process to rebuild and repair lives in Nepal. The long-term relief process is still ongoing and vitally important.

On the two-year anniversary of the earthquake, in honor of the lives impacted by the destruction and GlobalGiving’s nonprofit partners dedicated to the relief effort, GlobalGiving is matching donations at 50% starting 09:00 a.m. EDT on April 25, 2017 (18:45 p.m. NPT on April 25, 2017) until 23:59:59 p.m. EST on December 31, 2017 – while funds last. Also, for the first 24 hours of the campaign, organizations are competing for $3,000 in cash bonus prizes!  The bonus prizes will award most donors and most funds raised. Donations will be matched up to $1,000 USD per donor, and each organization participating is eligible to receive up to $20,000 USD in matching funds.

100% Match Campaign for Kumamoto Earthquake One-Year Anniversary

100% Match Campaign for Kumamoto Earthquake One-Year Anniversary

In April 2016, a series of earthquakes, including one of 7.0 magnitude, struck Kumamoto, Japan  causing landslides and catastrophe. Thousands were injured and numerous buildings were destroyed. GlobalGiving partners were there to respond immediately providing water, first aid, and rescue to survivors. Donors on GlobalGiving jumped in to support our partners’ efforts. To date, more than 2,000 donors from around the world have come together to support the ongoing recovery efforts in Kumamoto.

Our partners have continued to stick by Kumamoto citizens providing long-term recovery and rebuilding efforts. To support these long-term earthquake recovery projects, GlobalGiving will be matching donations 100% in honor of the one-year anniversary. The 100% match opportunity begins on April 13, 2017 at 11:00:00 a.m. EDT. The campaign will end at 23:59:59 p.m. EST on December 31,2017 or when funds run out, whichever comes first.

Drum roll please… Announcing the 2017 Video Contest Winners!

Here at GlobalGiving we believe in the power of stories. And, in today’s digital world, it is more important than ever for nonprofits to be able to both tell and show their stories.

This year the GlobalGiving Video Contest received a record-setting 112 entries! We were thrilled to see your use of this important medium and it was extremely difficult to choose the top five entries — but here we go!

The 2017 grand prize winner for GlobalGiving’s Sixth Annual Video Contest is The Sweethearts Foundation, an incredible nonprofit based in South Africa which provides wheelchairs to men, women, and children in need. Want to find out how they do it? You’ll have to watch their video!

This year, our friends at the Social Impact Media Awards (SIMA) judged the top entries. SIMA is a nonprofit that celebrates social-documentary storytelling of excellence, screens films in communities and  classrooms worldwide, and connects international audiences and organizations  with the best global impact cinema.
