Microsoft YouthSpark #GivingTuesday has gone global!

gtsavethedateWe are excited to announce that this year, donors in the UK and US are able to make their donations go further while supporting their favorite projects!  Participating projects are able to fundraise on both GlobalGiving.org and GlobalGiving.co.uk, our sister UK site. Only YouthSpark designated projects active on GlobalGiving.org may participate in the campaign, so we are extending an invitation to our Leaders and Superstars with projects that work with youth ages 6-24 in the areas of education, employment, and/or entrepreneurship to join YouthSpark and the 2014 Microsoft YouthSpark #GivingTuesday campaign. Continue reading for more details…

Going global…   geographicglobaldonors

Projects currently listed on GlobalGiving.co.uk that would like to participate in this year’s Microsoft YouthSpark #GivingTuesday must cross-post to globalgiving.org by completing this expression of interest form, completing any necessary due diligence, and answer the YouthSpark eligibility questions in PE for each eligible project by November 10th (see below for details on how to join YouthSpark).

YouthSpark projects currently listed on GlobalGiving.org that would like to engage UK donors should complete the cross-posting process to GlobalGiving UK‘s site by November 25th. Let the UK team know you’re interested here as soon as possible.

Campaign details

There will be $350,000 USD total in matching funds released in buckets at two times. In addition to the matching funds, for 24 hours, projects will be competing for bonus prizes including most unique donors and most funds raised. All donations across both sites, matching, and bonus prizes will be calculated in USD on one leaderboard hosted on GlobalGiving.org. If you choose to fundraise on both GlobalGiving.org and GlobalGiving.co.uk on #GivingTuesday (December 2, 2014), we advise you to direct your UK donors to your GlobaGiving.co.uk project page link and direct US donors to your GlobalGiving.org project page link.

We would like to note that last year’s #GivingTuesday matching funds ran out very quickly. We have worked to create a campaign structure to address this. However, we do recognize and would like to set expectations accordingly, that matching funds may go quickly again this year.

You can find the full terms and conditions for this year’s Microsoft YouthSpark #GivingTuesday HERE.

Projects participating in Microsoft YouthSpark #GivingTuesday are not eligible for GlobalGiving’s Year-End Campaign (a fundraising initiative on GlobalGiving.org).

How to join YouthSpark youtsparkeligibility

#GivingTuesday is going global – Get ready!

Giving-tuesday_webIn the U.S., Black Friday and Cyber Monday traditionally kick off the holiday shopping season where retailers earn the more money than any quarter in the year. Launched in 2012, #GivingTuesday is a day-long campaign that aims to capture this spirit of generosity to help drive donations and volunteer hours during the holiday season!

#GivingTuesday falls on December 2nd this year and it is a call to action to find creative ways for your family, community, company or organization to give! Donations on #GivingTuesday grew 90% from 2012 to 2013. More than 10,000 nonprofits, companies, celebrities are already onboard in 2014. This movement has even gone global, with sister movements in 40 countries and regions, including Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United Kingdom, Latin America and Singapore!

In the lead up to #GivingTuesday this year, GlobalGiving hosted a webinar featuring some very special guests – Melissa Cronin and Kait Sheridan from 92Y, one of the creators of #GivingTuesday here in the U.S., and Patricio Boyd from OurMark, from the #UnDiaParaDar movement in Latin America! Watch the webinar recording here.

Melissa shared 3 things that an organization can do to make the most of #GivingTuesday:

  1. Try something new! The most creative fundraising campaigns are usually the most successful.
  2. Engage your existing supporters. Make them a part of your project.
  3. And design a campaign that helps you reach out to new supporters!

Patricio shared insights into the effort to spread #GivingTuesday concept to Latin America with #undiaparadar (one day to give) and the movement’s efforts to elevate the culture of giving in Latin America:

  1. Make the most of corporate partner matching funds! Donors like when their donation goes further.
  2. It not all about the money. Blood donation drives, food and clothing drives are also an effective way of giving.
  3. Engage more volunteers. A volunteer today could become a donor tomorrow!

More information about #GivingTuesday and fundraising toolkits to get you started can be found on here and upcoming webinars can be found here. If you have any additional questions, please email givingtuesday@gmail.com.

Organizations in Latin America are encouraged to check out #undiaparadar’s website and to get involved in this regional movement.

Finally, stay tuned for upcoming announcements about GlobalGiving’s Year-End campaigns and how your organization can participate!

So save the date – December 2nd is #GivingTuesday 2014!

Join YouthSpark initiative by Microsoft today!

We are happy to share exciting news with you today!  As a GlobalGiving partner, you may be eligible to take part in Microsoft’s YouthSpark initiative on GlobalGiving.org. Being part of this initiative means that your eligible projects will receive a special designation and be included in periodic promotional and matching campaigns.

YouthSpark is a Microsoft program, launched in September 2012, to create opportunities for 300 million youths around the world. The program empowers youth to imagine and realize their full potential by connecting them with greater opportunities in education, employment, and entrepreneurship; helping create a real impact for a better tomorrow.

For the past year GlobalGiving has partnered with Microsoft to power GiveforYouth.org, a micro-giving site specifically focused on youth. Since our partnership began in September 2012, Microsoft has generously provided ~$1 million in matching funds through Give for Youth impacting more than 35,000 youth. For example, GlobalGiving’s partner Leadership Initiatives joined GiveforYouth.org in February 2013.  To date they have raised $200,000 through the platform by posting 34 projects and microprojects and actively participating in matching opportunities on GiveforYouth.org.

Later this year, GiveForYouth.org will be migrating into a program run within GlobalGiving.org rather than a stand-alone website in order to support more youth-focused nonprofits and improve our ability to reach more donors interested in supporting youth around the world.

Previously, only a small number of nonprofits were eligible to be included in this program. Now we are expanding the opportunity to more eligible GlobalGiving partners! To be part of this exciting initiative, your organization must:

  • Work with youths between the ages of 6-24 in the areas of education, job training or entrepreneurship AND
  • Qualify as a Leader or Superstar on GlobalGiving.

If your work meets the first criteria you must fill out the “Eligibility for Microsoft YouthSpark” in the Project Entry System by November 8th to have your project reviewed for inclusion by GlobalGiving staff.     For detailed instructions, please see below.

1. To fill out the section, click “edit project” and go to Tab 1.  If you scroll down, you will see a new field that asks you whether you are eligible for GiveforYouth.org.  Answer “Yes”.

2. Enter the number of unique youths are benefitting from your project.

Eligibility

After you have completed these two steps, you will see that our system calculate dollars per youth in the space below.  This is calculated by taking your requested funding amount dividing by the number of unique youths.

Organizations opting in by November 8th  that are determined eligible by GlobalGiving staff will be able to participate in Microsoft’s #givingtuesday matching campaign with $250,000 in matching available to YouthSpark partners.

We encourage you to complete this section for relevant projects even if your organization is not yet at the Leader or Superstar level.  If your Partner Rewards Level changes to “Leader” your eligible projects will automatically be included in YouthSpark.

To learn more about participating in Youthspark initiative, sign up to attend a webinar on October 31st from here.  In the meantime, please email (giveforyouth@globalgiving.org) for any questions.
